I mentioned to a friend a couple of nights ago that I’m in a reflective mood. She reminded me that I’m fast approaching “that time of year.”
And that often prompts me to revisit my blogs & quotes, which have chronicled my journey from “we to me.”
The following quote, which I wrote in 2018, reminded me that we all need to deal with change in our own time, particularly when those changes turn our lives upside down.
We begin as individuals, with our own personalities, hopes, ambitions & identities.
Then comes marriage, shared experiences, successes, disappointments, compromises, laughter, challenges & all the little things that gradually shape the people we become.
Over the years, those layers become so intertwined that it can be difficult to distinguish where “me” ended & “we” began.
And then, suddenly, half of that shared life is gone.
When the future we imagined is suddenly snatched away, we can lose ourselves in an instant. But finding ourselves again can take years.
We have to give ourselves the time we need to grieve, to adjust, to rediscover our independence, to understand who we are now & to accept that person.
And the acceptance part isn’t always easy.
But, only then can we begin to find our own way forward.
